HANAC Corona Gardens Ribbon Cutting

Cuono Engineering was delighted to join HANAC, Inc. as they celebrated the completion of HANAC Corona Senior Residence with a ribbon cutting ceremony. This 60,000 SF, 8-story complex was designed by Think! Architecture and Design. It features 67 units for low-income seniors, 21 of which are set aside for the formerly homeless and a community center on the ground floor designated to early childhood education. The HANAC Corona building is the first Passive House certified affordable senior housing development in the US.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Queens Borough President - Melinda Katz, HANAC Director of Housing Development - Paola Duran and HANAC Chairman - Evangeline Douris, joined by other guests at the HANAC Ribbon Cutting on May 29, 2019.

The structural framing of this building consists of poured in place concrete flat plate construction. The stair and elevator cores make up the building’s lateral system. Due to poor soil conditions and a high water table, as well as the strict energy restrictions, the building had to be designed on a mat foundation…36” thick. In addition to the poor soil conditions, we built right up to the property line, which boarder existing structures on (3) sides which made the excavation difficult. We utilized proprietary thermal break products at the front canopies and to support the roof top mechanical equipment.

Today's ceremony received much deserved attention from local news stations and political figures for its positive impact to the community as well as its environmental sustainability. The ribbon cutting ceremony was followed by a tour of the building. Among the distinguished guests of honor in attendance were Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Queens Borough President, Melinda Katz.
