1188 Lofts

1188 Lofts in Bridgeport, included the restoration and adaptive re-use of a historic, industrial building to convert it into a modern, mixed-use building. The 5-story brick building consists of ground-floor retail and residential above.

The building’s framing system consisted of historic cinder slab arches with steel beams and columns. Due to years of water infiltration, corrosion of many of these elements required some areas to be reframed and others to be strengthened. Cuono devised an under slab reinforcing system to minimize areas that had to be demolished in order to preserve floor areas and maintain a cost-effective solution. The building’s lateral resisting system was upgraded with stair and elevator shaft walls designed as CMU shear walls for lateral stability.
