Betances VI Family Apartments
Structural design of 15-story, deeply affordable housing building which spans over 100,000 square feet in Mott Haven.
Betances VI is a newly constructed 15-story building located in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx spans over 100,000 square feet and boasts 101 deeply affordable housing units ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments. Of the units, 70 apartments are reserved for New Yorkers in the extremely-low, low, and moderate income bracket, while the remaining 30 units are designated for formerly homeless families.
Betances VI offers a range of amenities for its residents, including a children's playroom, bike storage, an outdoor green roof terrace, and 24/7 building security. Additionally, 10,000 square feet of the ground floor space is set aside for commercial use.
The structural design of the Betances VI, provided by Cuono Engineering, was instrumental in the efficiency and maximization of available space for the project. The main structural systems, which consist of a central concrete shear wall core, and concrete columns and flat slabs, was chosen to be the most cost effective for both the lateral and gravity loads. The use of flat slabs, with no drop panels or beams, not only took advantage of the maximum number of stories to be accommodated within the building height, but in turn, also increased the overall number of residential units available.
