Last week, Cuono Engineering awarded our 3rd Annual STEM Scholarship to Sophiana Simone, a senior at the Ursuline School in New Rochelle, New York. CE Principal and Founder, Ciro Cuono presented the award at the school's Graduation Liturgy, on Tuesday May 20th.
Sophiana, who will be attending Boston University in the fall to study Cellular and Molecular Biology, plans to pursue a career in orthopedic medicine - an area that combines her interests in anatomy, structure and engineering along with her desire to work directly with patients. Her impressive list of science-centric programs and extracurriculars include Ursuline's multi-year Science Research Scholar Program, the Urban Barcoding Project, Einstein-Montefiore's Summer High School Program, and Mount Sinai's Internship Program, which have allowed her to explore genetics, cancer biology and environmental science from as early as her freshman year. Through these first hand experiences, Sophiana has seen both the systemic inequity in patient care and the need to bridge the STEM gender gap.
"These moments have shaped how I see the STEM gender gap as a personal and structural issue. In lab environments where women are underrepresented, I've experienced the pressure to constantly prove my place. And yet, I've also see how much more vibrant, collaborative and creative science becomes when diverse voices are empowered."
The Cuono Engineering STEM Scholarship was established with the goal of promoting diversity and supporting young women who are passionate about pursuing a career in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics field, as we believe it is vital to address the challenges that women in STEM still face, from gender bias to lack of representation in leadership roles. We are proud to award this year's scholarship to Sophiana, who truly embodies its essence, and look forward to a future with more empowered, young women like her leading in the STEM fields!
