Cuono's Summer Happenings: Check Out the Events, Gatherings, and Professional Achievements at Cuono Engineering!

The past few months have been filled with great events, gatherings and achievements including a debate on AI, a boat ride along the Sound, a career milestone for one of our engineers, and a special visit from Manhattan College's President! As we get ready to say farewell to summer in just a few weeks, here's what our team has been up to at Cuono.

May 2024

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) of New York held a fun night of AI debates by industry experts at the 11th Street Bar on May 29th. Among the debaters was our very own Principal and Founder, Ciro Cuono who convincingly swayed the group against AI despite an initial vote in favor. Ciro's impressive debate even secured him two speaking opportunities on AI in Engineering in Nebraska and Iowa this fall - which we will keep you posted on! Also participating in the ICE event were Seyedomid Sajedi (Associate AI/ML Engineer - CORE studio), Pinar Guvenc (Partner - SOUR), and Pablo Galiana Rebelledo (Innovation, Technology & BIM Manager - Ferrovial Construction).

Early June was particularly busy for Cuono Engineering Principal, Ciro Cuono. On June 5th, the New York Landmarks Conservancy held their Annual Chairman's Luncheon at the Metropolitan Club in Manhattan. Among those who were honored with the Chairman's Award were, WJE Engineering & Architects. Many familiar faces were in attendance, including Acheson Doyle Principal & Founder, David Acheson and Principal Drew Hartley. Ciro also had the pleasure to meet, Senior Associate & Unit Manager, Michelle Dallhoff, who accepted the award on behalf of WJE Engineers & Architects. The award honors individuals and organizations that have contributed to preserving New York City's architectural heritage.

Following the luncheon, Ciro headed down to Washington DC for the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design, a 4-day event offering a wide array of networking and continuing education experiences.

July 2024

The end of July was a particularly busy month of networking and events for both Senior Associates, Karen Vaughan and Melissa Fitter within the tri-state area.

On July 25th, Senior Associate, Melissa Fitter attended the HBRA Drinks & Diapers event, held at Visual Comfort & Co. in South Norwalk. The evening event, which included cocktails, food and a preview of Visual Comfort's new landscaping line also provided a great opportunity to collect donations of diapers and baby wipes for the Children's Connection, a an nationally accredited child advocacy and abuse prevention center based in Connecticut. Melissa made a contribution to the drive on behalf of Cuono Engineering.

Earlier that day, Senior Associate, Karen Vaughan attended the New York Builders Congress (NYBC) Industry Breakfast which featured a "Building a City of Yes" panel discussion. Speakers included NYC Department of Design & Construction Commissioner, Tom Foley, NYC Chief Public Realm Officer, Ya-Ting Liu and NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner, Ydanis Rodriguez. The discussion, which circulated around collaboration & innovation, including  open streets for more vibrant communities, lessons learned and the success of design build, and community interaction to build the city that we all want into the future was well received among the attendees. Cuono Engineering is particularly excited to see these conversations continuing to gain momentum as the city and surrounding areas face increasing challenges with housing shortages and commercial vacancies.

The following morning, Melissa joined the AIA-CT Women in Architecture Coffee Meetup in Norwalk. This monthly gathering provides an intimate setting in a casual environment for women architects and allied professionals to connect, share ideas, and support professional growth. A special guest joined the recent meetup; a summer intern from CPG's office who shared his modeling experience and the other opportunities that he was provided to learn and enhance his professional development.

Karen and Melissa met up later that morning for a boat ride from Rye to Port Washington. The intimate gathering, which was hosted by Christian Templeman of Morgan Stanley included David Gross (Principal - GF55 Architects), Steven Ebert (Cassin & Cassin LLP), Keith Albertina (Nuveen), and Kyle Nolan (Morgan Stanley). The group spent the afternoon cruising the Long Island Sound while discussing the importance of cybersecurity and financial planning within firms. A scenic lunch along the sound was held at Louie's Prime Steak & Seafood in Port Washington before heading back to Rye.

Other Special Events & Accomplishments

Earlier this summer, Cuono Engineering Assistant Project Manager, Jarett Rooney received his P.E. license in the state of New York. We are proud to see the accomplishments of our staff as they continue to grow professionally. Jarett is among several of our engineers who have received their licensing while working at Cuono Engineering.

In July we celebrated National Intern Day, with a website and social media feature highlighting the work of our two college interns, Remaz Alasad and Jean Gabriel Decimus. In addition to the online recognition, a few of our engineers took Remaz, Jean Gabriel, and our White Plains Youth Bureau intern, Shariya Hasan out for a special lunch in Manhattan.

Most recently, Cuono Engineering was honored to host Manhattan College President, Dr. Milo Riverso and Associate Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Dr. Moujalli Hourani at our White Plains office. With nearly half of our staff being alumni of the college, and our firm Principal being both an alumnus and adjunct professor, our team was certainly thrilled for the opportunity to show some Jasper pride at work. Drs. Riverso and Hourani even brought some Manhattan College swag for our office that we now have proudly displayed!
